Today's Word of the Day is ASSESSMENT. Assessment is a noun meaning, "A task teachers ask students to do so they know where students are at and what they mean."

Assessment comes from the Anglo-French word assesser meaning, "To fix the amount (such as a tax or a fine)."  If you dig deeper into the etymology, it goes back to Latin as many words do. The Latin word assidere means, "To sit beside and judge" and is the true base of assessment.

The iReady diagnostic is an example of an assessment used here at Jewett. We look at what students show for knowledge and make decisions about how best to give them what they need based on the data.
